This housewife dumps over 12 litres of milk as COVID-19 turns villain
Wayanad: Leela, a housewife from Kunnamangalam, has been dumping over 12 litres of milk every day as COVID-19 outbreak affected the sale. After her son tested positive for COVID-19, nobody purchases milk from this small dairy farmer.
Earlier, Leela used to sell 22 litres of milk at households and Kunnamangalam dairy cooperative society. But when her son was diagnosed with the virus infection, the milk sale was interrupted. Hence, this 62-year-old woman lost her only source of income.
Soon after her son tested COVID positive, Leela shifted to her second son’s house. But as she is quarantined, neither the regular customers nor dairy cooperative society purchase milk from her.
“Though the sale is interrupted, I’m continuing to milk the cows. Because, If I skip it, the cows may suffer health issues. After taking the milk for personal use, I have been dumping it daily,” said Leela.
“I’m incurring a great loss from this crisis. Nowadays, the milk has also decreased as I’m unable to feed the cows properly due to the shortage of cattle feed,” she added.
Meanwhile, the dairy cooperative society office-bearers informed that they will collect the milk once Leela produces the COVID negative certificate attested by the health inspector and ward member after completing the quarantine period.
