This fisherman is on a mission to grow 1000 mangroves in backwaters
Thrikaripur (Kasaragod): Fisherman O Rajan had taken up a mission to plant mangroves on the banks of backwaters at Edayilakkad here. Rajan plans to grow 1000 mangroves at a stretch of one kilometer in the southern banks of Edayilakkad.
Rajan, during the intervals of his job, collects the seeds of mangroves and sow them in the banks of backwaters. He started the mangrove planting mission on June 5. Within this short span of time, he already planted over 700 mangroves. He uses coconut fronds to shield the seeds from being washed off by waves.
Rajan collected the seeds of 'Bhranthan Kandal’ (a kind of mangroves) from different parts of the backwaters. Navodaya Library in Edayilakkad also helped by collecting 300 mangrove seeds for him. Rajan is determined to grow more mangroves on the banks of backwaters and thereby protect the ecosystem.
