This family loses sleep over vehicles losing control
Vannappuram: A family residing near a sharp turn at 40-acre here on the side of the Vannappuram-Chelachuvadu road have lost their sleep over fear of vehicles crashing into their house and its premises.
Raghavan, a painter by profession, bought the plot with the house and moved in nine years ago. The house is situated on the side of a sharp bend on the road at the end of a steep descend. Most of the vehicles which lose control in the descend and turn end up crashing into their house. The lack of a barricade or crash guard makes the situation worse.
At any moment, an out of control vehicle could crash into the house or the compound. The family wakes up at the slightest noise at night thinking that it’s the next vehicle crashing into their house. family does not have the financial resources to rebuild the damaged portion of the house. Owing to the repeated accidents, the structure of the house is now weakened making it even more dangerous for the family to stay in it.
So far around 10 vehicles have crashed into their house. Among them, five vehicles ended up in the ditch between the road and the house. The rest of the times, the family members narrowly escaped death.
Last year, a lorry driver lost control of his vehicle which landed in the compound killing two persons. The cleaner of the lorry and Raghavan’s neighbour, who is a housewife were the victims then. Few days ago, a scooter crashed into Raghavan’s house. Two persons travelling on the two wheeler escaped with minor injuries. It was the third incident in three weeks.
Raghavan has sent his two daughters, both pursuing their graduation, to his relatives houses as they are unable to concentrate on their studies. Only Raghavan and his wife stay in the house now. “At night we wake up on hearing a vehicle coming up the hill and stay awake until it goes past the house,” says Raghavan.
Thought the panchayat has sanctioned a house for Raghavan, the family has been unable to start construction owning to technical reasons.
