This 79-year-old has been living inside a pump house for a decade
Palakkad: Madhavan, a resident of Chellankavu colony in Kanjikode owns 1 acre of land but he does not have a house. For the last 10 years, this 79-year-old has been calling a pump house his home.
For the last decade Madhavan’s home has been a small room with a motor pump and wires carrying electricity to the motor. The walls have many holes on them and the roof is made from metal sheets. The door is made up of two corroded sheets of metal. A cot and a small stove are the only other amenities.
Lack of identification documents including a ration card have been preventing this elderly man from getting his own house. Madhavan does not even know how to secure the documents.
Born in Malampuzha, Madhavan’s parents died years ago. He had been staying with his sister at Attappallam in Walayar. After his sister died, Madhavan returned to his land and built a hut to stay using coconut palm leaves. Over the years, the hut got damaged and the local residents let him stay inside the pump house.
Age no longer permits Madhavan to go to work as a daily wage labourer. Neighbours provide him with essentials to cook and eat.
“We tried to secure a house for Madhavan by including him in the Life Mission project. However, lack of documents prevented it. Efforts are being taken at the department level to solve this issue,” said Arun, ST promoter for Chellankavu colony.
