Kottayam: The black Fiat Elegant model car which carries the number MDC 9779 has been making heads turn wherever it takes a ride. The 1957 model car with old Madras Coimbatore registration is owned by environmentalist Adv Santhosh Thomas Kandamchira, a native of Kottayam.
His father Thariyan Thomas purchased the car for Rs 6500 in 1957. During that period, there was no facility for vehicle registration in Kerala. Hence, Thariyan Thomas took his car to Madras for registration.
The car has been the talk of the town since 1957. Auto-enthusiasts are always finding this vintage car as a special one.
“Years ago, I took long rides in this vintage car. But it is no more possible in the present condition. A few months ago, a part of its steering got damaged. I had spent a huge amount to purchase the spare parts online,” said Santhosh.
He is maintaining the car without damaging its classic look.
Apart from this 1957 model car, Santhosh also owns a 1997 model Fiat car.
“Whenever I take the car for a small ride through Kottayam, many people will give a signal to stop the car. They only intend to take a selfie with the vintage car. Some people also express their wish to sit inside the car. I used to receive calls from people who love vintage cars,” said Santhosh.
As the government has been mulling scrappage policy, Santhosh is worried about his vintage cars. He stated that he is ready to take any step to keep his special Fiat car with him.
