The deep-red ‘Thakkali Pullan’, a surprise guest at Munakkakadavu harbour
Chavakkad: The ‘Thakkali Pullan’ prawns brought to Munakkakadavu harbour drew attention of the public, with their charming red colour. Kulachal native Densten’s boat arrived atthe harbour on Monday loaded with ‘Thakkali Pullan’ prawns.
This variety of prawns are rarely brought to Munakkakadavu harbour. Usually, the fishing boats carry these prawns to Kollam and Munambam harbours, because it has no market in other places. Different from other varieties of prawns, ‘Thakkali Pullan’ prawns are deep red in colour.
Other varieties of prawn are available from the sea at a distance of 10 nautical miles from the shore, whereas ‘Thakkali Pullan’ prawns are usually caught from deep sea; around 60 nautical miles from the coast.
Since these prawns are not taken in Munakkakadavu harbour, the fishing boat workers contacted them from the sea to know whether they would take the prawns. To their surprise, the prawns were bought for Rs 180 per kilogram in the auction. They reached the shore with a boat-full of prawns, after spending weeks in the sea.
The season of ‘Thakkali Pullan’ prawns is usually during the months of November, December and January.
