Supplying hot food in plastic covers to invite action from food safety dept
Malappuram: The food safety department in the district has come up against supplying hot food items in plastic covers and plates. A night squad of the department will soon be appointed to find the vendors who distribute hot food in plastic containers.
Street shops, hospital canteens and hotels mostly depend on plastic plates and covers to supply hot food items. The food safety department decided to take action when the merchants continued to follow the method despite warnings.
Earlier, there was a method of heating milk packets by placing on top of hot samovars. The food safety department stopped this sytem because when plastic is heated, it produces a carcinogen chemical called dioxin.
Malappuram Food Safety Department Assistant Commissioner P. K. Janardhanan said that it is ideal to replace plastic covers with aluminium foils. The food safety department can levy a fine upto Rs 1 lakh if they find food being contained in plastic covers, he added.
