Stone pelting over rooftops in Idukki may be a phenomenon, opines geologist
Idukki: When stones started to fall on the rooftops, Selvaraj and Suresh thought that someone is deliberately pelting stones at their houses. Later, they realised that the stones on the surface of the earth are being hurled at the houses on its own.
The strange geological phenomenon has been continuing for the last two weeks near the houses of Suresh and Selvaraj, natives of Pulinkatta, Idukki. It was started on July 2. It continued for several nights and later happened in the daytime too. Apart from this, a plot near their house had subducted slightly.
The house owners informed the police about the incident as they thought that the stones were pelted by someone at them. When Vagamon police arrived for an inquiry, they noticed that the stones were getting hurled to the rooftop. This baffled them and they left after collecting some stone specimens. Later many people came to the spot to see this unusual occurrence.
“We don’t have any clue on what’s happening around us. We are really amazed and scared at the same time. Several times, the stones fell even on my children,” said Suresh to mathrubhumi.com.
When the stones started to fall incessantly, the panchayat officials on Friday shifted the family to a relative’s house.
Police and the natives are inferring that the increasing pressure of the underground water might be the culprit here. A team of geologists will visit the spot on Monday.
Dr G Shankar, geologist, informed that the region of Upputhara already has a history of experiencing such different geological occurrences. He had visited Upputhara when an incident of soil piping was reported there. "Soil piping (tunnel erosion) is the formation of underground tunnels due to subsurface soil erosion," notes National Centre for Earth Science Studies. This may form cracks on the nearby buildings and wells or cause subduction.
“The stone pelting happening in Upputhara is likely to be a similar phenomenon. Only a detailed study on this can reveal the mystery.”, said Dr G Shankar.
