Snowfall with rain cause huge crop loss in Kattappana
Kattappana (Idukki): Large snow balls poured down with rain in Vazhavara near Kattappana, causing crop loss. The snow balls weighing 20-30 kg fell all over the 500-acre farm in Vazhavara area on Sunday evening. The snow had not melted down till Monday morning.
Cardamom, pepper, plantain and other crops were destroyed due to snow fall in the field. As per primary assumption, a loss of around Rs 50 lakh has occurred. The rare phenomenon was reported in Wayanad last May and in Nedumkandam in December.
A larger version of hail caused the crop loss in Vazhavara. K. K. Ramachandran, head of Atmospheric Sciences in the National Centre for Earth Science Studies in Thiruvananthapuram, said that the snow might have formed as the air and steam reach the atmosphere all of a sudden and pour down along with rain.
