Snail catchers rewarded by Muhamma grama panchayat
Alappuzha: Muhamma Grama panchayat gifted ducks to the households for killing the African snails that have become a threat to the farmers. As many as 50 families that killed over 20,000 snails received two ducks each.
Muhamma grama panchayat member Adv Latheesh B Chandran distributed the ducks, as part of the panchayat's snail free village programme. The distribution was inaugurated by district collector A Alexander.
Over a year, the African snails are posing a huge threat to agriculture in Muhamma. The snail population further increased with the heavy rainfall in the region. Then the natives came forward and took up the mission of killing them.
As many as 436 households took part in the mission. A bucket of salt and a ladle was given to them. They continued the mission for five days.
A separate committee was constituted to count the snails caught by each household. The gift was given to the 50 houses that caught the maximum number of snails.
The winners in the next phase will get free travel in Kochi metro to Aluva.
