Sisters locked up in house for 10 yrs; father seeks alms to survive
Parassala (Thiruvananthapuram): The people are pained to see the plight of a family here that includes two women who have not stepped out of the house for 10 years and their aged father who seeks alms for survival.
Karode native Ramachandran Nair (70) and his daughters Chithrakumari (38) and Smitha (36) are leading a miserbale life after the demise of his wife Leelakumari 10 years ago. Ramachandran seeks alms and all three of them survive with this.
The daughters have not stepped out of the house for last 10 years. Ramachandran goes out after locking his daughters in the house for their safety. According to the neighbours both of the women are mentally ill due to their life in the locked house for such a long period.
The locals said that both the women scream aloud when anyone comes to the house thinking they would harm them. So, the relatives and neighbours seldom visit them. The sisters had completed Plus two and lab technician course from Nagarcoil.
The family relocated from Nagarcoil about 15 years ago. Ramachandran's wife Leelakumari died 10 years ago at Parassala taluk hospital while undergoing treatment. With this, their daughters were completely alienated.
During night, Ramachandran locks daughters in the house and sleeps outside in a shed made of plastic sheets. They only have clothes which people give to Ramachandran. He is concerned about his daughters' life after his death.
Though the family had a ration card, they lost it somehow and are not getting the ration supply. As the locals reported their condition to authorities, the panchayat has been supplying food packets to them for a few days.
