Rukhiya makes 'Pookkalam' at neighbour's house for this Onam too
Pallikkal (Malappuram): Puthoor native Itheerumma Rukhiya is all set to make beautiful flower carpets (Pookkalam) for this Onam too. As her family does not follow the custom of making Pookkalam at their household, she usually makes it at the houses of neighbours. This has been her habit for the past 25 years.
On Thursday, Rukhiya created a beautiful Pookkalam at the house of her neighbour Baburajan. Rasha Fathima, a child from the neighbourhood, also joined her. Rukhiya had won first prize in a flower carpet making competition held in Kozhisserimadu in connection with the Onam celebrations two years ago.
Rukhiya has been living in Perinthalmanna until her marriage at the age of 24. She used to make Pookkalam in the neighbouring houses since then. As she lived watching people of different religions cooperating with each other regardless of their faith, Rukhiya was inspired to develop a broadminded view.
She makes flower carpet on all 10 days from Atham to Thiruvonam. She has plans to grow flowering plants for the next Onam season. Many plants are already been planted in the flower pots in her house. Her husband Abdulla works as a power tiller operator. The couple has a son and a daughter.
