Rs 10 for a day’s meal, water for a day costs Rs 300
Kalikavu (Malappuram): The residents of Poongod Poolakkunnu colony in Kalikavu panchayat are struggling to spend more amount of money for water than food every day. They spend at least Rs 300 for water daily whereas rice for a day’s meal can be bought for Rs 10.
The colony residents are struggling to meet the expenses of water on a daily basis. The 2 wells in the colony have dried up already and the Jalanidhi scheme also have been stopped. More than 80 families in the colony find it hard to purchase water in the scorching summer.
Presently, water is filled in containers and supplied in goods autorickshaws. It costs upto Rs 300 to bring water once in a day. The people are compelled to take water from a quarry nearby though the water in it is not pure.
A five-member family need water to be supplied at least twice a day. With this, they have to spend the entire wages they earned for getting water. Many of the colony residents are unemployed also.
Most of the families migrated to the colony from various places due to intense poverty. They said that the authorities turned a blind eye to the issue amid the hustle-bustle of elections.
