Road accident victim asks for 30 lakh, Court orders over Rs 1 cr compensation
Kozhikode: Money can never wipe off their tears, nor it can get their son a normal life. But definitely, it can ease the pain of a family whose dreams were shattered by a road accident three years ago.
After seeing the plight of Leo Thomas bedridden after a road accident in 2013, the Kozhikode Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal ordered a compensation of Rs 1 crore and 94,000, much more than what this family asked for.
The unfortunate incident in the life of Leo Thomas happened on March 31, 2013. Leo, son of Thomas and Leelamma of Kodencherry, was working at Popular Service Centre in the city. He met with an accident on the way to his office in Kozhikode and suffered serious brain injury. He has been bedridden since then.
The compensation will be released by Reliance Insurance, the insurance provider of the truck that was involved in the accident.
Thomas had in fact asked for just Rs 30 lakh as compensation, the amount which he spent for Leo’s treatment so far. But Judge M G Padmini ordered a higher compensation after taking note of Leo's health condition through his photograph and the medical board report.
Adv G Manoharlal and Adv Sudha Haridas appeared for Leo.
The parents have knocked on the doors of almost all noted hospitals in the country, including NIMHANS, with his medical report with the hope that Leo can be brought back to normal life. However, they were all helpless. After hearing the court order, Leo’s mother Leelamma wants to take her son to Vellore for further treatment.
When Leo was discharged from the hospital one month after the accident, a breathing tube was inserted through his neck, another two were inserted to his stomach and bladder. The parents tried Homeopathy, Ayurveda and almost all other medicines, hoping for an improvement in his condition.
After getting a Diploma in Automobile Engineering, Leo has been working for various private companies in the city. He was a body builder and an instructor in the field. He was planning to go abroad to work as a gym instructor when tragedy struck. Leo cannot see but only move his eyelids. He does not talk, but groans as if in pain.
Even when thanking the judiciary, Thomas and Leelamma were struggling to hold their tears. Deep within, they knew that Leo can never get back to his normal life again.
