Rare kingfisher pays surprise visit, family offers warm welcome
Thrissur: A family residing in Madappadu house in Guruvayur woke up on Saturday morning to see a rare little bird that fell down after hitting the window pane. Raju and Jeyna, the householders, could not identify the bird and thought that the multi-coloured bird was a baby of hornbill.
In fact, the bird is Oriental dwarf kingfisher which is rarely caught on camera. The bird does not have the length of even a 15 cm ruler but a festival of colours can be seen on its feathers.
The bird has rather long beak with a colour that ranges from orange to red. Its neck and front portion of body has pale yellow and golden colour feathers. Wings are a mix of dark and light blue colours. There are shades of purple on its head and tail has light brown feathers.
The bird is rarely seen in Kerala. They migrate from Assam to Goa coastal region only for breeding. A group of birds also seem to migrate to Sri Lanka and they pass through the forests of Kerala on their way.
Krishnaraj and Krishnanjali, the children of the family, were sad to let the beautiful bird go. But their mother convinced them about the value of freedom. Later, the family let the bird fly away after feeding it with guppy fish on Sunday morning. The bird might be on its way to Sri Lanka now.
