Kozhikode: Alathur MP Ramya Haridas on Sunday took to her Facebook page to share pictures and videos of herself taking to the paddy fields in her native place planting saplings and driving a tractor.
The photos and videos have gone viral receiving wonderful support from netizens. Most people shared the opinion that India needed public representatives like Ramya who were ready to take to the fields. Many wished to see more such new generation MPs.
Ramya Haridas of United Democratic Front (UDF) had become and MP defeating sitting parliamentarian P. K. Biju of LDF by a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes. She contested the Lok Sabha elections while holding the post of Kunnamangalam block panchayat president which she later resigned.
Ramya’s girl-next-door image and singing popular Malayalam movie and folk songs quickly made her popular among the voters and earned her the nickname ‘little sister of Alathur’.
Ramya’s background of being the daughter of a daily wage worker and living in a house donated by the Indira Awaas Yojana scheme made her stand out.
One of the most promising participants of the ‘Talent Hunt’ that Congress chief Rahul Gandhi held in 2010, Ramya is the only female parliamentarian to be elected from Kerala in the 2019 LS polls. She is the second Dalit woman MP from Kerala.
