Ramankutty of Guruvayur Dewaswom dies
Guruvayur: Ramankutty, the oldest elephant of Aanakota, died on Thursday. Elephant Ramankutty of Guruvayur Dewaswom holds the record in winning 11 titles at the famous aanayottam (elephant race) annual festival. Ramankutty is being revered by all in Kerala as he is a prominent face in poorams with decorations and caparisons.
The end of Ramankutty, aged 65, came on Thursday at 12.50 pm. He was suffering from old-age ailments and was undergoing treatment for breathing problems and liver dysfunction for a month. Mahout Unnikrishnan, who was with Ramankutty for 17 years, took good care of the elephant.
On Thursday, Ramankutty was given a bath and food. He started showing signs of uneasiness and later fell down dead.
Ramankutty is well aware of the temple rituals of Guruvayur. He was the newsmaker 3 years back when at the elephant race he started running even before the start whistle. He was donated to the Guruvayur Dewaswom by Raman Namboothiri on May 17, 1956.
