Ponnani municipality collects 25,000 kg footwear waste during lockdown
Kottakkal: Ponnani municipal authority had collected 25,000 kilogram waste items including footwear and bags during the lockdown. The authority had taken effort to collect these waste from houses examining it as a serious threat to the environment.
The municipal authority collected waste from houses in 33 wards and took it to Niravu Recycle centre at Vengeri.
Collection of waste is on progress in other wards under Haritha Karma Sena.
Haritha Karma Sena members informed that one load waste will be sent to the recycle unit on Wednesday. The municipality is implementing the project without collecting any fee from the households.
Broken bottles to be collected
The authority has also decided to collect broken bottles to dispose of it without harming the environment. People are directed to keep broken and unusable bottles in a sack.
Haritha Karma Sena will collect these sacks from each house.
Ponnani municipality formed Haritha Karma Sena two years ago intending to make Ponnani a zero-waste town.
Haritha Karma Sena with 48 members collects plastic waste from each house in the municipality. A small fee is collected from each house for disposing of plastic waste.
The municipality is also collecting waste from local areas with the help of volunteers.
Waste collected from each house will be sent to recycling units.
