Ponnani hanging bridge to be modelled after Howrah Bridge
Ponnani (Malappuram): The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has approved the sea bridge proposal connecting Ponnani and Padinjarekkara here. Rs 289 crore was allotted for the hanging bridge which will be constructed as part of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragod coastal corridor.
The one-kilomtere long sea bridge will be built across the Ponnani river mouth where Bharathappuzha joins the Arabian Sea. The hanging bridge is modelled after Howrah Bridge in West Bengal and will be a milestone in the coastal corridor. A 650-kilometre long cycle track of international standards also will be built in the corridor adding the parts of Thalappady-Edappally NH-66.
The project is being realised as per the instruction of Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan, who is also the MLA of the constituency. The project also has huge possibility for tourism. The walkway on the hanging bridge will face the sea and allow the tourists to watch sunset.
Apart from this, another project titled 'Ponnani Tourism Triangle' is also being planned connecting Biyyam backwater, Bharathappuzha, Nila Museum, Marine Museum, indoor stadium, children's sports park, Karma river walkway, Conolly Canal, Ponnani harbour, Ponnani river mouth, Padinjarekkara park and Padinjarekkara beach.
