Pilot Sivakumar’s daring act saved Yusuff Ali and others
Ponkunnam: Everyone was shocked when the crash-landing of the helicopter in which businessman Yusuff Ali and 4 others were travelling made headlines on Sunday. The timely courageous act of the pilot Sivakumar averted a major disaster. He landed the helicopter on the swamp as a precautionary measure to avoid causalities.
Sivakumar had the presence of mind to take an appropriate decision at a crucial moment. His experience as a wing commander in Air Force motivated him to take the daring step.
“When the running engine stopped, both pilots tried our maximum to start the next engine. As it didn't start, we decided to make a safe landing,” said Sivakumar.
Pilot KB Sivakumar is the son of Koyippurath Madathil Bhaskaran Nair and Bhavaniyamma, natives of Chirakkadavu.
“When the news channels reported the helicopter’s crash landing, he phoned us and said he is safe," said the pilot’s elder brother Sasi Kumar.
In the private chopper, two pilots, including Sivakumar, were on board. As Sivakumar is a senior pilot, he is addressed as captain.
After retiring from Air Force as wing commander, Sivakumar joined an airlines named Religare in New Delhi. During this period, he flew special flights and helicopters for VIPs including Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi and Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Later, he joined as pilot in Yusuff Ali’s chopper. Interestingly, it was Sivakumar who took the chopper from Italy to India.
Two weeks ago, Sivakumar visited his ancestral house in Chirakkadavu. He is settled at Vyttila in Ernakulam.
His family includes his wife Bindhu and two sons. Elder son Thushar is working as a mechanical engineer in Canada. Younger son Arjun completed his studies in Aeronautical engineering.
