People perform Bali tharpanam rituals in households due to COVID fear
Kochi: Amid the COVID restrictions, many families performed 'Balitharpanam' rituals (remembering ancestors) with the help of online instructors. They waited till the instructor appeared on the screen and then performed the rituals as per his direction. The temples and Aluva Manappuram, where usually the rituals are performed, remained deserted this year.
Palarivattom native KAS Panicker and family waited for Facebook live at 8 in the morning. They had already arranged sesame, sandal, flowers and other items required for the ritual. Then all of them acted according to the instructions and chanted prayers. When the 20-minute long rituals were complete, the offering for the ancestors was taken to the terrace.
Majority of the people managed to perform Bali tharpanam with the help of YouTube this time. Those who instructed people at temples for the rituals had posted videos of the instructions on YouTube before the Karkkadakavavu day. Also, the rituals were aired through Facebook live. Only very few people managed to reach the temples for the ceremony. All others remained in their houses.
