Pending SC verdict, public declare judgment on 2015 poll rivals; both swear-in as panchayat members
Thrissur: UDF candidate Ravi Namboodiri and LDF candidate AK Baiju took oath as Annamanada panchayat members indicating an end to their legal battle against the 2015 poll verdict. Though the Supreme Court has not pronounced the verdict on their plea against the last LSG poll result, their voters have settled the dispute with this polls.
The duo fell into a dispute over the LSG poll results of 2015. UDF candidate KK Ravi Nambodiri and LDF candidate AK Biju who contested from Annamanada town ward obtained a equal number of votes in the election. Ravi turned lucky in the draw of the lot and was elected as panchayat member.
Protesting against this, Baiju approached the munsif court alleging that Ravi did not mention about being convicted in a political case on his nomination paper. As the court rejected his petition, he approached the district court and then High Court. Following this, the High Court declared Ravi’s victory in the polls as void.
After the verdict, Ravi resigned from the post of panchayat vice president and approached the Supreme Court. With this, the party in power automatically lost its majority.
Though the Supreme Court approved Ravi’s membership in the panchayat until its final verdict, his right to vote and other allowances were restricted. This order also landed the panchayat administrative committee in trouble.
Amidst the legal battle, the state conducted the Local Self-Government Polls this year. Ravi and Baiju contested in the polls from two different wards this time.
Ravi Nambooditi won the polls from 4th ward by 12 votes while KA Baiju won the seat in 11th ward by winning 531 votes.
The duo shook hands with each other settling all dispute during the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
