Passengers,… the train has been delayed due to ‘urine passing’
Kannur: When submitting the Combined Train Report (CTR) to their superior officer after completing their duty, loco pilots and guards on a train frequently mention ‘urine passing’ as the reason for delay.
It means that the loco pilot or guard had gone to the toilet in the station to relieve himself/herself. The punctuality controller, who checks the efficiency of staff under the division understands the situation perfectly.
Because, these railway staff, including women, who operate the trains for hours does not have a toilet inside the engine compartment. They depend on the toilet in the station or in the brake van, one compartment behind the engine loco.
The ground reality of being a loco pilot was revealed when the video of a train operator urinating near a stationary train went viral on social media. The diesel engines widely in use today do not have any room for a toilet as the compartment has to accommodate the power plant, generator and engine.
However, the electric locos have toilet facility inside the engine compartment. Thus, the passengers will not know even if the loco pilot goes to relieve himself/herself.
New design will provide relief
The railways had introduced bio-toilet (vacuum toilet) facility in trains in May, 2016. However, the doors of such toilets will open only after the train comes to a complete stop.
This means that the train will be ‘on the brakes’ if loco pilot is in the toilet. Railway officials said that the newly designed locos will have toilet facility.
