Panoor (Kannur): Police in Panoor, an infamous place for political violence and tension, have an array of duties and responsibilities to accomplish departmentwise. Besides that, the law keeping officers here, are venturing into a new social responsibility, to help the unmarried men in the locality to get married.
In and around Panoor, many young men had lost lives in political violence and many were imprisoned. When their friends of similar age lead a happy married life with family and kids, many in the locality are still walking on the veranda of courts in connection with the cases they are involved. Some of them are jobless.
In this backdrop, the new initiative of Panoor police turns important. Through this, police plan to entrust them with the responsibility of leading family.
During summer holidays, NSS volunteers will conduct a survey at 19,000 houses under the jurisdiction of the police station and list out the bachelor men. Data collection will include family background, educational qualifications and all other necessary details of them.
Panoor police inspector P V Benni said that a meeting of political parties and socio-cultural organizations will be called in this regard.
Those involved in political issues shared their worries with police that they wouldn’t get bride in such conditions. Police also opined that parents hesitate to send their daughters to a place like Panoor which is known for violence and political tension.
With an intention to actualize at least one government employee in a family, Panoor police had earlier started ‘Insight’, a free competitive examination coaching programme 6 months ago. They provide PSC coaching to candidates through 20 centres at Panoor and Kolavallur and training to get job in para military.
Inspector P V Benni said that the support and acclaim they received for Insight programme inspired them to venture into this new initiative. The collective support for Insight from party activists to make it a success, was a different experience, added Benny.
