Painted bat resembling butterfly spotted in Kozhikode
Perambra (Kozhikode): A painted bat, one of the rare species of bats, was found in Koothali here on Friday.
The bat was seen in the compound of Jineesh of Veluthadan House. As painted bats tend to hide between foliage and abandoned bird nests, they are spotted very rarely.
Orange and black colours on its wings help identify painted bats from other bat species. They are normally found in forests in Assam, Western Ghats and groves in Kerala. The major habitat of painted bats is banana plantations. These bats mainly feed on insects.
Painted bats are experts to catch insects while flying. They spot the prey with the help of sound waves. Perambra higher secondary school teacher Dr Abdulla Paleri said that no serious studies have taken place on the characteristic and lifestyle of these bats.
