Owns name of attacker, serves rescuers every day; stray dog lives loyal to police
Kasaragod: After spending many days as a stray dog, now Diju has been promoted as an unofficial guard of the police force here. Earlier, the dog was straying around Kanhangad area stealing new footwear of people. His life was totally changed after he stole the new footwear of a migrant labourer named Diju Mardia for the third time.
On seeing the dog stealing his footwear, Diju hacked the dog on its head with a sword. The locals knew about the incident and informed the police. The police officers took the dog immediately to a veterinary hospital and dressed its wounds. They brought him to Hosdurg station later. Since then, the police station has been its home.
The police officers did not spare the migrant labourer who injured the animal. They arrested him on charges of cruelty to animals and imprisoned for 52 days. Finally, he confessed and paid a fine for the offence and was released. However, the dog owned his name Diju. Now he responds when called by the name.
Diju always follows the police officers wherever they go as part of duty. He has dedicated his life for those who saved his life once. The dog is present at the station and with the officers most of the time.
