Ornithologists to take count of Asian waterbirds in Ernakulam
Kochi: Ornithologists will carry out a survey to count the waterbirds in Ernakulam district on January 10, Sunday.
Cochin Natural History Society and Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishat Varapuzha unit will carry out the survey as part of the annual Asian Waterbird Census.
The ornithologists will carry out the waterbird survey at the wetlands in Kadamakkudy, Devaswompadam, Karumaloor, Veliyathunadu, Puthuvypu beach, Nedumangad, Thamaravattom, Edavanakkad, Kandakkadavu, Nedumbassery and Valiyapadam in Tripunithura.
In view of COVID-19, the number of ornithologists was reduced to 25. Usually, 40-50 ornithologists take part in the survey.
Each group will include one photographer and 2-3 ornithologists. The survey will be carried out from 6.30 am to 10 am.
Waterbird census is being carried out in the district for past 10 years.
Gulls, Grebes, Storks, Cormorants, Darters, Ruffs, White-breasted waterhen, Grey-headed swamphen, Jack Snipe, goose, Flamingo and Herons are some important waterbirds largely found in Ernakulam district.
