Omana Amma, the people’s Anganwadi teacher
Vettikkavala: For her noble gesture and dedication towards Anganawadi and its students Omana amma was a grand farewell by the people of Nadukkunnu. The 33 year long Anganwadi teaching life drew curtain on Friday.
In her early teaching life, the Anganwadi did not even have an own building. It functioned in various houses where space was available sometimes in cow shelters.
When the panchayat said that fund will be allotted if there is land for construction, in 2005, Omana Amma bought four cents of land with her own money and gave it in panchayat’s name.
Later in 2008-2009 year, the building was constructed for the Anganwadi. Rs 2.5 lakh was obtained from the panchayat but the total cost mounted up to 3.5 lakh, the rest of which was contributed by Omana amma.
Every student of the Anganwadi is her own child for Omana amma. Hence, there were never shortage of students here.
It is this love reverted that was seen in her retirement function. The invitations, sadhya and every other arrangement was carried out by the people and they bestowed their love for her with a golden ring.
