Punnayoor (Thrissur): A turtle arrived at Mandalamkunnu beach to lay eggs this year too. The Olive Ridley turtle laid 134 eggs in total. Turtle Conservation Committee members Hamsu, Thahir and Kamaruddeen arranged a net cage and shifted the eggs safely.
The turtle reached the shore on Wednesday to lay eggs. The eggs are protected with the cooperation of forest department. It takes 50 days to hatch the eggs. The turtle eggs are collected from different parts of the beach and kept in holes dug in sand. A protective cage is set up around it.
Last year, the turtle came on January 10 to lay eggs. The members of Turtle Conservation Committee found 1230 eggs from different parts of the beach till February 26 and protected them. Among them, 796 eggs hatched. The eggs are protected with the cage to keep away predators.
