Now, captains will be in charge of trains in India
Thrissur: From now on, captains will be in charge of trains in India. The facility, deployed on six trains in the southern railway on experimental basis, will now be implemented in all long distance trains in the country.
The phone number of each train captain will be shared with the reservation passengers, who can be contacted for each and every matter related to services offered in the train. The railway board is implementing the facility with an aim to solve complaints of the passengers within the trains itself.
The captains of each train will be responsible for checking the facilities offered, ensure hygiene, availability of water, quality of food and beverages and solving electrical complaints. The captain will be the point of contact for railway employees and contract workers as well.
A captain will be a senior Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) and will have a special badge and a cap with the title ‘Train Captain’ written on it. He will get a special seat in the AC compartment. The railway is considering dark blue trousers and white shirt as uniform for captains to differentiate them from TTEs.
The railway is planning to implement a system where he captain will also take care of checking tickets. However, this will increase the work load of TTEs and there is a concern that upgrading TTEs to captains will not yield the intended result.
If the captains are to serve the passengers properly, the railway must significantly increase the number of TTEs. At present there is a shortage of TTEs. Only 430 are working in Palakkad division against 501 and below 500 are working in Thiruvananthapuram against 623.
