No respite from thieves: Idukki farmer loses 300 banana bunches in just 90 days
Idukki: Paulson Solomon, a farmer hailing from Karunapuram here, has been exasperated by thieves. In just 90 days, he has lost 300 banana bunches from the 7-acre plot which he took for lease. Reportedly, the farmer has lost around Rs 3 lakh to this.
Paulson, who is abroad, had assigned K J Georgekutty to look after the farm. Various crops like cardamom, pepper and coffee are cultivated in the plot. Along with that, around 25,000 banana plants were planted. Varieties of banana were cultivated as mixed crops. But when the harvest season began, thieves emerged as villains.
When theft became rampant, Georgekutty painted the banana bunches to make them identifiable if someone tries to sell it off. Interestingly, some painted bunches were found from the vegetable shops at Kochera. However, the police were not successful in cracking the case.
Theft has become a routine incident at Paulson’s farm. Similar incidents are reported in the nearby plots too. A complaint has been filed by Georgekutty. Meanwhile, Kambammettu police maintained that measures to nab thieves have been strengthened.
