No demand for Kanthalloor apples; farmers in crisis
Idukki: Apples have bloomed and are aplenty on Kanthalloor mountain areas. However, farmers are forced to sell it at a really low price as there is no demand for it.
Kanthalloor mountains are one of the few places in Kerala where apples can be cultivated. A lot of tourists visit the place to see and buy the fresh apples in the past few seasons. Unfortunately, this year COVID-19 destroyed all the hopes of the farmers. There are no tourists visiting Kanthalloor mountains due to fear of the disease and lockdown.
The farmers are forced to sell their apples at a really low price. In the last season, apples were sold at a price of Rs 200 to Rs 400 per kg. Farmers are demanding that Horticorp should buy the apples from them at a fair price.
