No basic amenities; Manappuram boat jetty cries for attention
Poochakkal: The boat jetty along the Manappuram-Chemmanakari ferry has been adding to the troubles of the commuters. The ferry attains importance as more people belonging to the southern areas of Alappuzha depend on it to travel to Kottayam.
However, the boat jetty at Manappuram lacks basic amenities and is in a dilapidated condition.
The two wheelers to be loaded on the raft are to be taken along a narrow passage leading to the dock. This becomes an issue especially during the rush hours.
Also the handrails of the passage leading to the jetty are at a low height. Any slight toppling of the vehicle might cause accident and into the backwaters.
There is no roof over the jetty. Commuters are forced to get wet in rain while waiting for the raft. Many students and office-goers depend on this raft service. The boat jetty had earlier collapsed due to lack of maintenance.
Also there is no provision to transport bigger vehicles across the water. Only people and two-wheelers can be loaded on the raft. The ferry service begins at 6.30 am and ends at 7.30 pm with an interval of 30 minutes.
Every year, Thaikkattussery and Maravanthuruthu panchayats alternatively take the contract for the ferry service here. However, the complaints and requests by the people for repairing and maintaining the boat jetty falls on deaf ears.
