New plant in Western Ghats named after Dr Indira
Kottakkal: A new plant discovered in Western Ghats was named after Dr Indira Balachandran, director of Centre for Medicinal Plants Research in Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala. The plant which comes in the variety of Hedyotis under Rubiaceae family was named as Hedyotis Indirai. The medicinal plant called ‘Parppataka Pullu’ (diamond flower) also belongs to this family.
The plant was named after Dr Indira Balachandran as honouring her contributions to the field of medicinal plants.
A team led by Dr KM Prabhu Kumar, senior scientist in Plant classification wing of Centre for Medicinal Plants Research, discovered the new plant. They found the plant at Muthikulam forest in Palakkad in 2013 and 2016.
The research report was published in an international journal on plant classification which is published from Italy.
“Hedyotis Indirai grows at 6300 feet above sea level. Compared to other herbs, the plant has white flowers,” said KM Prabhu Kumar
Maliyankara SNM College teacher Dr CN Sunil, senior scientists Dr R Jagadeesan, VV Naveen Kumar, Aiswarya Pilathottathil and VS Hareesh were in the team of researchers.
