Ooty: Neelakurinji has bloomed once again in Nilgiris. As the plants bloom at the same time, the whole place turns blue. Hence the place acquired the name Nilgiris. (Neela means blue in Malayalam). The Neelakurinji has bloomed at Mulligoor, around 30 kilometers away from Ooty.

The Neelakurinji flowers that bloomed belong to the variety which blooms once in 12 years. They normally bloom in the months of March and April. Botanist Dr S Rajan said that the change in climate and shorfall in rains this year is the reason for the blooming of Neelakurinji now.
