Narrow escape for Meppadi man as wild elephant destroys house at night
Wayanad: Meppadi native Nadir was woken up at midnight by some strange noises from his kitchen. When he switched on the kitchen lights, he was totally shocked to see a wild elephant standing there.
The incident happened at a house in Attamala Harrison plantation sentinel rock estate which KP Nadir took over for his farmhouse. Nadir said that he saw the elephant’s trunk between the broken wall. The elephant had destroyed the window and the door. The groceries and vegetables were scattered on the floor.
The elephant stood near the kitchen for almost 3 hours. Since he was alone at the house, Nadir immediately ran to the neighboring house. The elephant left the house by 3 am. By then he had suffered a loss of around Rs 50,000.
The cowshed in his neighbor Balakrishnan’s house was also partially destroyed. Though elephants wreak havoc in the area frequently, this is the first time it destroys houses and properties. Forest department authorities reached the area in the morning after being informed of the incident. The forest department officials drove away the elephant to the forest on Wednesday morning by 11 am.
