Malappuram: Tourists who cross Nadukani ghat road will be surprised to have the pleasant sight of ‘Mooti Pazham’ tree here. The tree started to bear chilly red fruits.
The tree named Baccourea courtallensis is commonly called ‘Mooti Maram’ or ‘Mooti Pazham’ tree. This tree is widely seen at evergreen forests in Western Ghats.
The tree bears fruits only on the lower part of the trunk. Initially, the fruits will be in pink colour and turns chilly red later.
Mooti Pazham has a mixed taste of sour and sweet.
According to forest officials, these trees are rarely found in Nadukani Ghat forest range.
People stop their vehicles after finding the red fruits which shine like ember. Most of the people are seeing the fruit for the first time in their life.
As they have no idea whether it is edible, they dare to pluck it from the trees. Getting attracted to the fruits, they click photos of the tree and leave.
The area where the tree is located started to turn like a tourist spot which gives the sight of the rare fruits.
