Monsoon fails; water levels at Sasthamcotta lake drops
Sasthamcotta: Even though monsoon has reached its fag end, the water levels at Sasthamcotta fresh water lake has not increased.
Presently, the water levels are decreasing by 1 cm daily. In this year’s monsoon, water levels have not increased from minus to plus level. On Saturday, the water level reached minus 32. With this, the hope that water distribution can be carried out with the water received during monsoon was lost.
While the water levels rose to 108 cms in the same period in 2013, the water levels had increased to plus 36 in 2014. After the start of monsoon, the water levels rose by 1.5 mts only.
Due to the scorching heat resulting from lack of rains, the water levels are decreasing day by day. Hence, the lake does not have the needed water to conduct full-fledged pumping.
Water Authority Assistant Engineer S Thambi said that pumping would have to be cut short if the same situation continues.
Water level dropped to minus 154 due to the severe summer this year. As the water dried up, pumbing had to be cut short for two months. The water authority hopes that it will rain continously and the water levels can be upped to zero from minus level by September. However, the monsoons cheated this year. If strong rains are not received, the state will face severe shortage of drinking water next summer. The alternate projects have not reached any where.
Around 48 million litres of water are distributed from Sasthamcotta lake daily. The water from Sasthamcotta lake is distributed in Kollam corporation limits, Chavara. Panmana, Sasthamcotta, Padinjare Kallada and Shooranadu Panchayats. The lake depends on rain water and water from natural springs for its sustenance.
