Migrant worker, imprisoned for crime he didn't commit, released after 3 yrs; searches for child
Thrissur: In a heartbreaking incident, a migrant worker who was imprisoned in jail for 3 and a half years, was released from jail after the court found in innocent. Suresh, a native of Tamil Nadu, was booked for possessing banned drugs. As there was nobody to take him on bail, he was forced to spend more than 3 years in jail.
After getting acquitted from the case and released from prison, Suresh has been searching for his child and the place where his wife’s body cremated.
Suresh, a scrap dealer, had moved from Nagercoil to Kochi along with his wife. While leading a peaceful life in Kochi, his life turned upside down on Christmas day in 2017. Ernakulam central police booked him after finding banned drugs on his sack which carried the scraps.
A medical shop had abandoned these drug bottles which were expired. Suresh collected these bottles of drugs for separating the aluminium from the bottles’ caps. Though Suresh communicated this matter to the police, they refused to believe him.
Suresh, who is an illiterate didn’t know any language other than Tamil to communicate with others. As there was nobody to taking him out on bail, Suresh was remanded on December 27, 2017, and housed in Thrissur district jail.
Following the end of his remand period, his wife Atbhutha Mary made attempts to release him in January 2018. But before the court considered the bail application, his wife breathed her last following the delivery. Though Suresh was informed about his wife’s death, he was given no onformation about the baby.
Though his family at Meenakshipuram in Nagercoil tried for his bail, they stepped back after police informed them that he is an accused in a drug case. Later, the family cut off all ties with Suresh.
The public came to know about the story of Suresh on May 6, 2020. He made headlines by donating Rs 10,000 earned from his daily wage job in jail, to Chief Minister’s COVID relief fund.
Ernakulam First Class Additional Sessions Court acquitted him from the case after finding him innocent. Public prosecutor Sreekumar appeared for Suresh in the court. Kochi based Bluebell group director Jomon George appointed Adv AJ Abhilash as assistant to Adv Sreekumar after knowing Suresh’ s life story.
