Meet this 105-yr-old fish vendor in Thrissur who proves age is just a number
Chenthrappinni (Thrissur): Edathiruthy Pulinchodu centre here always witnesses a crowd around a fish vendor. Though selling fish is not something new, this vendor deserves some attention as he is 105-year-old. Proving age is just a number, Abdu Puthiyaveettil is still selling fish for a living.
Abdu started fish selling at the age of 9. He has never stopped the job except for a brief period during the lockdown. First he worked as a helper of fish sellers and later became a vendor. He remembers collecting fish from the coastal area from Chettuva to Azhikode and carrying it in basket for kilometres to sell.
Abdu travels to Kaipamangalam Company Kadavu beach in an auto rickshaw every day at 4 am. He reaches back at Pulinchodu by 7.30 in the morning with the fish collected from the first boat. He finishes sales by 12 at noon.
Abdu has regular customers who queue up to buy fresh fish from him. People know that he sells only fresh fish which is not kept in ice. The local residents said that people come from even other panchayats to buy fish from Abdu.
Abdu has four daughters and three of them were married off. His wife died 20 years ago. Though he has age related ailments, Abdu never seeks help from others for fulfilling his needs. No matter the weather, the centenarian is busy selling fish at a small shed arranged at Pulinchodu centre.
