Meet Shafi's 'winged friend' who loves idli-sambar
Poinachi (Kasaragod): For the past three years, the best friend of Mayilatti Adukathbail native K M Shafi is a peacock. He cannot spend a day without meeting the beautiful bird. The peacock also shows the same affection to Shafi and visits the house upto 3-4 times a day. This has been a routine for three years.
62-year-old Shafi works as banana farmer, mechanic and mason. The banana plantation is close to his house. If the peacock does not visit his house, it comes to the plantation for sure. When the bird comes to Shafi's house, he feeds it with grains, snacks and boiled rice.
"The bird loves Idli, Sambar and smashed rice. It comes to banana plantation for drinking water. It looks at me whenever it meets me on the way. The bird comes to my house on seeing me and takes full freedom if we give some food," Shafi said.
Even if Shafi is not at home, his wife Shereefa and daughter Jaleela feeds the peacock. On seeing strangers, the bird would flee from the scene without having food. Mayilatti in Bare village is a camp of hundreds of peacocks. Large herds of peacocks can be seen on the wayside and farms in the place.
