Kozhikode: Everyone will be surprised to know about the 35-year-old cow. Raveendran, a native of Onchiyam here has been continuing to rear this old cow at his residence.
He also holds proof to prove the age of his cow named Prabha who is known as ‘Pasu Muthassi’ in Onchiyam.
Prabha, an indigenous cow breed of Vatakara, was only two years old when she reached Raveendran’s house for the first time. Raveendran’s uncle Kumaran gifted the cow to his mother Sarada during 1985-86.
Prabha had its first delivery in the next year at Raveendran’s house. This fact was noted in a diary. In total, Prabha had 14 deliveries. The last one was recorded in 2003.
“Interestingly, Prabha gave birth to bull calves in 13 deliveries. Her last delivery was a day after my mother’s death. It was a cow-calf,” recollected Raveendran.
Raveendran is very close to his 35-year-old cow. Due to this attachment, he continued to protect it even after it completed the age of breeding.
Many butchers approached him to purchase the cow. But he was not ready to leave his favourite animal.
“Prabha has no teeth now. So, she can’t eat grass. So vegetables and fruits are her main food. Her horns are also curved due to old age. I have many problems in my life. But still, I am not ready to sell our ‘Pasu Muthassi’. She will be with me till death,” said Raveendran emotionally.
