Meet Anannyah, the first transgender to contest Kerala assembly polls
Malappuram: Anannyah Kumari Alex will script history as the first transgender to contest the assembly polls in Kerala. She filed her nomination as a candidate of the Democratic Social Justice party from Vengara constituency.
Foraying into politics for the first time, she will contest against Muslim League candidate PK Kunhalikutty and LDF candidate P Jiji.
Vengara seat will witness a tough battle as senior politician Kunhalikutty is contesting here. This transwoman’s candidature has also taken Vengara to the spotlight.
In foreign countries like New Zealand and USA, people from transgender community are serving as ministers. But in Kerala, transgender people often face isolation from society.
Anannyah is making her entry as a candidate in the assembly elections by overcoming all these challenges.
“It is not a matter of victory and defeat. I just want to represent my community. It is my aim. I filed my nomination on Friday. I wish this political battle should be marked in history,” said Annanyah who is also the first transgender Radio Jockey in Kerala.
“I want to create an evidence for my existence in the world. If I win polls, I want to work for the people who are isolated from the mainstream of the society,” she added.
Anannyah also revealed that transgender people in Kerala are happy for her electoral fray.
“If I get elected, my first focus will be the upliftment of my community. I want to work for all. But the transgender community needs special consideration,” said Anannyah.
The transwoman is all set to start her election campaign.
“Along with following the party’s directions, I will have my own opinion in the campaign. A public representative’s opinion have great value in society. I decided to contest the polls representing my community. Apart from raising demands for our community, I think we should have a representative in the government. I want to prove the efficiency of transgender people. I think I will be able to prove it if I get elected. I have to discuss many subjects with the society, meet many demands and achieve many things,” Anannayah expressed hope.
