Meet a complete photography family with all 6 members having the same passion
Upputhara (Idukki): The family of Rajan P Sreenilayam, who owns Anupama Digital Studio in Chappathu here is a complete photography family. Rajan P Sreenilayam, his wife, son, daughter, son-in-law and daughter-in-law are photographers and are part of the studio. It was Rajan who took up photography as a career and later each member of the family joined one by one.
From harmonium to camera
It was music that led Rajan to photography. He used to play harmonium during devotional programmes. Once photographer Jayan Thaliyani, who was a regular visitor at the devotional programmes, asked Rajan to teach him harmonium. That was a turning point in his life.
In return, Rajan requested Jayan to teach him photography. Thus he learned the basics of photography. In 1984, Rajan bought a second-hand black and white camera. Next year, he also bought a colour camera. After freelance work, he set up the studio in Chappathu in 1988.
Involvement of family
In the same year, Rajan married Rama. She joined him to assist in the studio and gradually learned to take passport size photographs and do other works. However, she withdrew from studio works after their children were born.
Their daughter Hima and son Sethuraman started visiting the studio at a very early age and were involved in the works there. From 2005 onwards, Sethuraman began working with his father and started attending photoshoots.
Now the studio is run by the father-son duo. While Sethuraman manages the outdoor shooting, Rajan deals with works inside the studio. Sethuraman's wife Sruthi manages the editing works at the studio.
Rajan's daughter Hima works in a studio in Dubai. The pictures of Mullaperiyar she took with her father were widely noticed. Her husband Anuroop also is a still photographer. He works in an advertisement company in Dubai. Earlier, he used to work as a videographer in the film and TV serial industry.
Passion for art
Rajan loves photography and music alike. He managed to learn keyboard and violin amid the busy schedule. His children also are artistes. Hima is a dancer and drama artist. Sethuraman had won prizes in Mridangam competition at the state school youth festival.
