Meet 113-year-young Mariyamma Uthup who saw 5 generations of family
Malappuram: Perinthalmanna native Mariyamma Uthup is 113 years old and has seen five generations of family. Her family includes a total of 102 members and the youngest baby of fifth generation was born only a month ago.
Born in 1908 in Muvvattupuzha, Mariyamma married Uthup at the age of 22. Mariyamma and Uthup reached Perinthalmanna in 1946 August, one year before the Independence was declared. They bought a 2-acre land in Puliyakkode and started staying in a hut. The couple have 14 children and only 5 of them are alive now. The eldest of them is 84-year-old Saramma.
Mariyamma has many memories of the past life. When she was resting in the hut after giving birth to twins, a leopard peeped into the hut through a hole in the wall made of coconut frond. She cried aloud and the leopard fled from the scene. But wild boars were scarier than leopards, she said.
She also remembers how eight families in the neighbourhood made a church in a small shed. Mariyamma believes that she attends the Christian Revival Prayers in Muvvattupuzha without fail and it is the secret of her long life. Even now she remembers lines from Bible.
Except for some hearing issues, Mariyamma has no health problems and has never been hospitalised. She only uses a walker. She used to go to Muvvattupuzha every year before COVID times. She believes that doing good, believing in God and staying calm are the secrets to long life.
