Kumily: Chitra Pournami festival of the ancient Mangaladevi Kannaki temple situated in the dense forest will be celebrated on Friday. The temple is located in the interiors of the Periyar wildlife sanctuary. Tight security has been beefed up in the area under the direction of Idukki and Theni district collectors.
Pass for pilgrims will be available from the counters at panchayat bus stand and border check post from 5.30 am on Friday. Jeeps will conduct services from panchayat bus stand to the temple between 6am and 3pm. One side journey on jeep costs Rs 100 for a pilgrim. Taxi charges will be Rs 2000. Vehicles that have pass from motor vehicle department will be allowed to conduct services to the forest temple.
Loud speakers, photography, videography and use of plastics are strictly banned in the forest area. Food could be brought either in paper wraps or leaves. Drinking water in plastic bottle are not permitted. If needed, 5 litre cans could be used.
Health department will deploy ambulance services in various places. Kerala and Tamil Nadu police will carry out inspections on the way besides forest department’s surveillance.
District collector H Dineshan asked people to follow directions of officials to ensure safety of pilgrims.
