Man collapses on board bus and dies; staff abandon him on road
Udayamperoor: In a shocking incident, bus workers abandoned a man who collapsed in the bus and fled from the spot here on Thursday. Though his family reached the place and rushed him to a hospital, he was declared dead.
The incident took place around 2.30 pm on Thursday at Poothotta. The deceased was identified as Pushpangadan (57), a native of Udayamperoor.
Pushpangadan’s wife lodged a complaint with Udayamperoor police seeking an inquiry into his death.
Pushpangadan was working as a driver to a doctor at Chottanikkara. On Thursday, he boarded a private bus ‘Cheers’ from East Fort to reach Udayamperoor. He was about to alight at SNDP stop in Udayamperoor. But he collapsed in the bus. Ignoring the ailing passenger, the bus moved without taking him to hospital. The bus workers contacted Pushpangadan’s friend from his phone after finding the number in the last dialled list. This friend informed the matter to Pushpangadan’s family.
“When I reached Poothotta with two of my neighbours, I found my husband lying on the ground,” said his wife Raji.
The family complained that some people stopped them from taking Pushpangadan to hospital declaring that police have to reach the spot to take him. Later, the family took the man to Taluk hospital by 4 pm but his life was not saved.
Pushpangadan was under treatment for heart-related ailments.
It is reported that the bus workers continued service after abandoning Pushpangadan at Poothotta. The bus passed by a private hospital and Puthankavu government hospital with the ailing passenger. But it is complained that they were not ready to take the man to any of these hospitals.
Pushpangadan’s funeral will be held at Tripunithura crematorium on Friday around 2 pm. He is survived by wife Raji and two children Aswathy and Adithyan.
