Making a garden using plastic bottles: Antony’s style of reusing
Kanjirappally: We maintain a use-and-throw culture when it comes to plastic bottles. But Kulappuram native Mundaplakkal Antony blaze a trail by making a garden with plastic bottles and vessels. He has planted flowering plants in the plastic containers collected from the premises of houses and roadsides.
Antony started the garden one and a half years ago. The garden has about 500 plants now. His eco-friendly and less-expensive garden is quite different from the usual types of gardens, which people make, using costly flower pots and other settings.
The garden contains more than 200 plants, of which leaf plants are most in number. He has chosen indigenous plants for the orchard. Since Antony is interested in farming, he also cultivates vegetables like ash gourd, pumpkin, okra and spinach, in addition to the flowering plants.
He has already bagged the award for the best small scale farmer sponsored by Parathodu Panchayath and Koovappally Cooperative Bank. Antony is the caretaker of Koovappally St. Joseph Church. But he finds time to maintain his garden and farm.
Everyone can model Antony’s style of gardening, which is eco-friendly and cost effective at the same time. Antony opines that if everybody adopted this method to prepare gardens, we can keep away plastic from our compound.
