Magician invents ventriloquy doll that can talk to vocal cord vibration
Thodupuzha (Idukki): A magician has stunned all by making a ‘talking doll’ that can talk without external prompting unlike ordinary ventriloquy dummies. The new doll named as ‘Raju’ is the brain child of Magician Stanlin Gopinathan aka PGS Mandrake. The doll is capable of talking according to the vibration of the operator’s vocal cords.
Thattakkuzha Kollappuzha native Stanlin has been a ventriloquist for long. The operator moves the dummy with his hand to make it lip sync with the artist’s sound. Stanlin started thinking of a doll that can talk without the help of the operator only one and a half year ago. Within 18 months, he managed to develop a doll that talks on its own at the cost of Rs 10,000.
‘Raju’ talks using an equipment tied to the throat of the operator. The doll talks according to the vibration of vocal cords. The lip sync also is perfect. As the operator can control the doll from distance, the audience cannot identify that the voice is coming from the operator. Stanlin has not yet disclosed the technology behind the new doll. He only hinted that it is combined of science and magic.
Now he is trying to develop the talking doll as a learning tool for small children. He also plans to make the doll greet the people in the style of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The 58-year-old has been a magician for over 45 years. He has invented several other equipment like automatic coconut plucker. His wife Chithra and children Aparna and Anupama also support him.
