Karadka’s own Benny from Rwanda
Karadka: Ukkizi Mavo Benanue aka Benny, a native of Rwanda, had planned to attend his friend’s marriage, bless the couple and take off to Annamalai University to enroll for studies on his arrival to Kerala few months back. But the unexpected lockdown wrecked all his plans.
With no means to return home or to university, Benny stayed in Karadka under the love and care of the locals. For him, India is Karadka and for locals here, Benny is not just a football player from Rwanda, but one among themselves. Their links go way past 10 years.
Benny arrived at Karadka in March to attend his college friend from graduation days at Annamalai University, Renjith’s marriage. He had earlier arrived here in 2010 to play football for KFC Karadka and his team had won 10 out of the 11 tournaments. Later he returned home following a knee injury. He was given a grand farewell by the sports lovers then. In 2014, he returned with family to visit his loved ones.
Though his MBA admission at the university was in April, he had come in March to attend his friend’s marriage.
Benny studied BA Economics at Annamalai University in 2008-12, while Renjith was a student of BSc. Benny was a footballer in University team and had played for XI Indian Bank in Chennai as guest player. Seeing his expertise, Renjith invited him to play for a club in Karadka.
Benny gave his daughter an Indian name when she was born. His 11-year-old daughter is called Surya. His wife Agnes and 4-year-old son Eyan are waiting for his return to Rwanda.
Though sad over his return, the locals are putting in efforts to procure money to send him back on the chartered flight send by Rwanda government to India on July 2. They have also bought him clothes and toys for his children back home. His flight expense alone will cost over Rs 1 lakh. He also needs to arrange money for quarantine facilities back home upon arriving.
